The Nazi Regime
The Nazi empire spanned twelve years, from 1933-1945, transforming Germany into one of the most formidable powers in Europe.
Size – 3.6 million square miles
Economy – Circa 1938: $375.6 Billion (90/100)
Nazi Germany’s economy benefitted greatly from the introduction of Hermann Goering’s Four Year Plan which set out the goals of the German industry in the 1930’s. The Four Year Plan focused on raw materials such as Iron Ore, Oil and Rubber, transforming Germany into one of the largest producers of Iron and steel in the world by the late 1930’s, second only to the USA.
Nazi Germany’s economy benefitted hugely from the emphasis placed on heavy industry and the production of war machinery with an estimated 75% of Germany’s GNP being spent on armament and defence in 1938. Furthermore the war time economy promoted a dramatic rise in armaments production with a threefold increase between 1943-44 .
Military - 1939 – 3.7 million troops, 400,000 Air Force personnel, 50,000 Naval personnel.
In the seven years of Nazi rule it is estimate that the German army had increased in size roughly eighteen times over as the Nazi’s sought to re-establish themselves as a significant military force within Europe, a status they had been relieved of since the end of the First World War.
The Nazi’s elite military faction, the SS were a major factor establishing Nazi control throughout Europe. As a supposedly superior Nordic/Aryan vanguard the SS were allegedly the most superior and racially pure soldiers in the German army. Hitler’s utilisation of the SS allowed him to consolidate power as the Nazi’s continued their invasion of Europe and beyond, prepared to go to any measure to fulfil the will of the Fuhrer it has been reported that ‘all codes of military conduct vanished on the Russian front as Hitler ordered the SS to liquidate all Russian political leaders and commissaries’, a dark reflection of their brutal and uncompromising nature.
